3.3 Longitudinal Concentration Profiles
After the identification of the major pollutants in the studied stream systems, the
subsequent goal of the project was the identification of pollution sources. The
identification of the pollution sources is a necessary basis for the effective
implementation of measures for the improvement and protection of the water
quality in both rivers. In order to locate possible pollution sources, longitudinal
concentration profiles for both rivers including their major tributaries have been
determined. Overall, 48 locations were sampled (see Fig. 2). Figure 9 shows
exemplarily the longitudinal AOX concentration profile. The figure shows clearly
the massive influence of inputs from the Moscow area on the concentrations of
AOX in the Moskva River. The sampling sites MI and M2 are located on the
Moskva River before the Moscow area and showed low AOX values that are
comparable to those of the unpolluted Oka River and its tributaries (036 - OA).
Very high concentrations of AOX were found for some of the tributaries of the
Moskva River after the area of Moscow (sample sites 7, 17). Multivariate
evaluations of the data using cluster analysis (CA) indicate a strong interrelationship of the major pollutants (see Fig. 10).

From the cluster analysis of the selected parameters for the 48 sampling sites,
five distinguished clusters could be derived. The parameters DOC (dissolved
organic carbon) and humics (humic substances) are very closely related and build
