Water In Ecosystems: A Non Renewable Resource
To evaluate with precision the risk associated with this type of contaminant, a
thorough knowledge of the pollution, its characteristics and evolution is
imperative.
Then many remediation methods (for instance pumping, washing, biodegradation,
etc.) can be undertaken.
6 AIMS OF THE RESCOPP EUREKA PROJECT
The RESCOPP EUREKA PROJECT groups Italian and French partners (SNAM,
AGIP, ITALGAS, AQUATER, ELF, C.G.E., I.F.P., B.R.G.M., BURGEAP). It aims
to develop a set of technically and economically competitive tools to perform
assessment and remediation work. Its methodological approach will encompass all
stages of a remediation project, starting with plume detection, to post-remediation
assessment. It will rationalize critical steps, such as data collection, goal definition,
implementation, site monitoring and clean-up assessment. Among others things, it
will help in selecting the most appropriate techniques for a given set of geology
and pollutants. The project covers three main areas: modeling, investigation and
monitoring techniques, all of them developed through laboratory tests, pilot
projects as, for instance the SCERES basin, at IF ARE (French and German Institute
for Environmental Research).
This basin (see Fig. 4), 25 m long, 12 m wide, and 4 m deep, enables us to test the
different tools created, on a real scale, in an isotopic and homogeneous material,
which cannot be found in nature. Later tests will be implemented on real sites.
A first step will be to write a handbook on the present state of the art of the
available techniques.
KEYWORDS
Underground contamination, chlorinated solvent, petroleum product, groundwater
pollution, remediation method, clean up assessment, pesticides, European
Community, water.
