ABSTRACT
Petroleum products and chlorinated solvents are the most frequently encountered
pollutants in underground site contaminations: they are the most commonly
distributed liquids after water. Among the risks they can engender, groundwater
pollution, fires and explosions are the most frequently mentioned. In order to
avoid these dangers, a good knowledge of the extension and intensity must be
obtained; then a correct risk assessment, taking into account the mobility of
products in each phase (gaseous, liquid, water ... ), must be performed, before
defining the best adapted remediation method. The RESCOPP EUREKA
PROJECT aims at developing a set of technically and economically competitive
tools to perform assessment and remediation work. Its methodological approach
will encompass all stages of a remediation project, starting with plume detection,
to post-remediation assessment. It will rationalize critical steps, such as data
collection, goal definition, implementation, site monitoring and clean-up
assessment. Among others things, it will help select the most appropriate technique
for a given set of geology and pollutants. The project covers three main areas:
modeling, investigation and monitoring techniques, all of them developed through
laboratory tests, pilot projects, and implemented on real sites. The first step will be
to write a handbook on the present state of the art of the available techniques.
