GalOIS: THE GEOPHYSICS ON-LINE DATA AND
INFORMATION SYSTEM
235
In the framework of the GEONET project GOLDIS is considered as an upper level
information system for managing centralized metadata resources and as a gateway
between GEONET users and IDN. GOLDIS is also a component part of the
Planetary Geophysics Data and Information System (PGDIS) which is being
developed at the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences to bring
together numerous on-line and off-line information systems which are in use now
at the GC and the WDCB.
The general plan for the development of the Geophysics On-Line Data &
Information System ( GOLDIS ) is to create a system to provide geophysicists
with:
• Information on international geophysical programs.
• Directories of international and WDC-B datasets and collections of data
prepared under international projects.
• A directory of scientists ( working bodies, etc. )
• Transparent access to the Cooperating and other nodes of the
International Directory Network ( IDN ).
Version 2 of GOLDIS is based on Sun-3 platform under UNIX Operating System.
This hardware and software environment provides developers with important
advantages compared to the previous PC based version, i.e. multiple access to the
system for both local and remote users, high flexibility to user's terminal settings,
etc.
The main parts of GOLDIS are shown in Figure 3. Some of them are still being
developed and tested; the following are operational at the moment :
• Electronic Bulletins. Current version includes National Geophysical
Committee Bulletin (in Russian, using 866 ASCII coding table), STEP
International (which is submitted by the USSCO) and RUSCO Bulletin,
submitted by the Russian STEP Coordination Office.
• Remote Systems & Networks. Current version provides users with
'transparent' access to remote (domestic and international) systems and
OPEN ENTRY to X.25 networks. With implementation of full
connection to Internet, OPEN ENTRY to Internet will be accessible as
well.
To use these services, user must be registered as Net User (see below).
This branch works as a gateway to remote networks and systems, which
provides users with automatic log-on to systems of International
Directory Network (IDN) and IASNET and Internet based systems.
