1 BACKGROUND
The CORINAIR project is one component of the CORINE programme which
followed the European Council Decision 85/338/EEC (27 June 1985) on a
Commission work programme for gathering, coordinating and ensuring the
consistency of information on the state of the environment and natural resources
in the European community. The different projects within CORINE are biotopes,
land cover, water resource projects and CORINAIR for the air emission project.
A first prototype CORINAIR inventory was achieved for the reference year 1985
and for the twelve EC Member states. Three pollutants were considered, S02, NOx
and VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), see Annex 1.
The present CORINAIR 90 project for the reference year 1990, which was in its
final step in September 1994, refers to more pollutants (height pollutants), and is
extended to most European countries :
the twelve EC Member States,
five EFTA countries: Austria, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland,
three Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania,
Nine Central and Eastern European countries: Albania (*), Bulgaria,
Croatia (*), Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia (*),
Slovakia and Slovenia.
(*) Only potentially involved in the CORINAIR inventory.
Since the beginning, CITEPA was the main contractor for the CORINAIR project
from the European Commission DG XI.
