Nowadays, with the decrease on equipment costs, establishment of partnerships
between researchers around the world, software tools available as free share-ware,
the potential for studies of acoustic ecology is growing. However, the quality of the
results still need to improve with the establishment of standard protocols for data
collection, analysis and description of acoustic results (Erbe et al. 2016).
13.5 Conclusion
Dolphins are highly socialized animals, using sounds for communication and foraging, as well as for many other aspects in their life, directly being influenced by the
acoustic habitat. We can conclude that the anthropogenic noises described here have
the potential to affect the Guiana dolphin’s ecology on the studied areas.
Sotalia guianensis is a marine ecosystem sentinel, species that reflect the quality
of the marine coast habitat that it live. The discussions in this chapter contribute to
the species knowledge and the influence caused by anthropogenic noise on these
animals, allowing for an evaluation of potential acoustic impacts of human activities
on marine ecosystems.
Nowadays, anthropogenic noise represents one of the biggest problems facing
oceans conservation. Bioacoustics studies are extremely important to support management actions, offering data about acoustic habitats and ecology of aquatic species, helping to stablish preservation measurements, restrictions and limits of
acoustic parameters, for the management of use and exploitation of aquatic ambient
by humans.
