In general, binoculars were the viewing device most used among these studies,
and frequently for Odontocetes, while theodolite/total station was mostly used for
mysticets studies. Basically, studies used focal follows and scans as sampling
method. All these land stations resulted in several studies as peer-review articles,
reports, PhD, Master and undergraduate thesis. Most of them were the description
of species behavior, habitat use, evaluation of the impact of anthropogenic activities, density estimates and evaluation of the impact of climate change. There was
also, a study combining land-based station observations with acoustics methods.
Many Latin America land-based studies enabled conservation actions, implementation and improvement of coastal management (e.g. Heckel et al. 2001, Sheidat et al.
2004, Morete et al. 2007a, Silva and Silva Jr 2009, Pavez et al. 2011, Lundquist
et al. 2013, Avila et al. 2015).
Information gathered from the review and web survey about the LBS studies
conducted in LA are presented in Fig. 4.8 and Table 4.2. Below, a summary of the
main characteristics, results and achievements of the land-based studies conducted
in LA, published in peer-review articles, is provided by country.
