Attains 81 mm. High-oceanic, mesopelagic; 74 - 400 m
(night); size stratification with depth. Off all our coasts. In
Atlantic and Indo-Pacific (25°S to Subtropical Convergence , but to 09°S in eastern boundary currents).

Genus Symbolophorus Bolin & Wisner, 1959
Maxilla moderately expanded posteriorly, extending well
past orbit; A base longer than Dbase. Dn small; Vn larger;
5 PO; 4 VO; SAO series strongly angulate; AO series
divided into AOa and AOp; 1 Pol. Supracaudal and/or
infracaudalluminous glands present. About 10 species; 3
(possibly 4) in our area.
