Infradivision EUTELEOSTEI
An ill-defined set of "higher teleosts" comprising all
those living (recent) teleosts that are left after subtraction of
the Osteoglossomorpha, Elopomorpha and Clupeomorpha.
Nelson's (1894) survey of the fishes of the world recognises
208
374 families of euteleosts, comprising some 19 642 species.
In addition to representing 90% of all living fish species, the
euteleosts far exceed all of the other fishes in their diversity
of morphology, ecology and behaviour.
