volume density. The instantaneous blood volume of the microcirculation
in locomotory muscles of icefish is quite similar to that found for other
teleosts, which argues strongly for a perfusion-limited system [20].
Similar arguments may be advanced for the vasculature of the gills and
skin [21,22].
Acknowledgments
The authors wish to thank the officers and crew of the PPS "Polarstem" and the
British Antarctic Survey for provision of specimens, and the Natural Environment
Research Council for support. Participation by lC.R. in the EPOS 3 cruise was
supported by the European Science Foundation, the Alfred-Wegener-Institut and
NERC. J.-C. Hureau assisted with identification of specimens. Scanning electron
microscopy was carried out in the School of Biological Sciences, University of
Wales, Bangor with skilled technical assistance by A. Davies. Acrifix was kindly
donated by A. Kunzmann.
