Fig. 2. Tanymastix stagnalis (Linnaeus, 1758), female: A. Right antennula, antenna and eye, medio-frontal aspect. B. Last thoracic segments,
genital segments, post genital segments and cercopods, dorsal aspect. C. Ultimate thoracic segment, ovisac, postgenital segments and cercopods,
ventral aspect. D. Last thoracic segments, genital segments with ovisac, postgenital segments and cercopods, lateral aspect. (Orig. Petkovski).
Wartlike chitinized protuberance at base of each dorsal lobe, on its lateral side (Fig. 3. G). Ventral lobes
smaller than dorsal with irregular shape (Fig. 3. H).
Distal article of antenna in its distal half sharpely bent inward (Fig. 3. H). Ventrolateral outgrowth
present with quadrangular shape beyond area of bend
(Fig. 3. H). Medioventral outgrowth situated at base of
distal article of antenna small and distally bilobed. Its
size corresponds to that of ventrolateral outgrowth on
same article (Fig. 3. H). Terminal part of distal article
of antenna three-lobed. Two lobes at apex, dorsal of
which wider and longer than ventral. Third lobe subterminally situated on mediodorsal border (Fig. 3. G,H).
Labrum bilobed. Proximal lobe with apical protuberance. Distal lobe tongue-shaped with bluntly rounded
apex (Fig. 3. D,E,F). Thoracic appendages typical of
genus. Single praeepipodite with slight incision on distal margin, and two conical outgrowths each terminating in one small soft spine (Fig. 4. A,B ,C). Epipodite
with oval shape, except that of eleventh pair of legs
which distally narrows to tapering point (Fig. 4. C).
Genital segments slightly swollen. Construction of
rigid and retractile portion of penis typical of genus
(Fig. 4. D,E). Postgenital segments smooth, without
outgrowths. Cercopods relatively long, distinctly articulated with telson, with long plumose setae on median
and lateral borders (Fig. 4. D).
Female Total length, from front to end of shaft of cercopods 7.6 to 16 mm . Antennula conspicuously longer
than antenna (Fig. 4. F). Antenna uniarticulate, proximal two thirds cylindrical, distal third narrowing to
tapering point, and not chitinized (Fig. 4. F,G). Antenna with two dorsolateral, pad-shaped bosses, first situated proximally at base of antenna, second subdistally,
where cylindrical part of antenna ends and covered
with fine setules (Fig. 4. F,G). Labrum and thoracic
appendages as in male. Last thoracic segment with one
pair of dorsolateral chitinized outgrowths on posterior
margin (Fig. 4. H,I). Genital segments much swollen.
Ovisac in lateral aspect semicircularly convexed with
one pair of chitinized backwardly directed thorns on
ventral surface. Ovisac in region of first genital segment bears one pair of dorsolateral, chitinized, wartlike
protuberances, which in some specimens may be covered by dorsolateral outgrowths of preceding segment
(Fig. 4. H,I). Cysts lenticular in shape with approximate diameter 0.35 mm. Postgenital segments without cuticular outgrowths or setae. Cercopods relatively
long, distinctly articulated, with plumose setae on lateral and median borders (Fig. 4. H,I).
Taxonomic notes
The species was first described and illustrated by
Orghidan (1945, 1953). Orghidan's comments on the
external morphology were brief and he failed to note
some of the important species characters. However
