Abstract
The genus Tanymastix Simon, 1886 is represented in Macedonia by two species: Tanymastix stagnalis (Linnaeus,
1758) and Tanymastix motasi Orghidan, 1945. The fairy shrimp T. stagnalis has been found exclusively in the rock
pools containing only severallitres of water, above the village of Stracin, N. E. Macedonia. T. motasi is present only
in the shallow rainpools, less than 15 cm in depth, scattered over an area of untilled, highly-mineralized pasture
land in the Pelagonia Plain, S. W. Macedonia. Both Tanymastix species are the only anostracans in their biotopes.
In Stracin, all the neighbouring rain pools in soil substrat are occupied by Chirocephalus diaphanus carinatus
(Daday, 1910). In Pelagonia, the deeper water bodies are generally inhabited by Chirocephalus pelagonicus
Petkovski, 1986 and Chirocephalus diaphanus carinatus (Daday, 1910).
On the basis of abundant material of both species, a detailed study of essential morphological characters has
been carried out and comparisions with data given in the literature have been made. In T. stagnalis, aberrant
morphological features were not ascertained. In T. motasi, the original description of the species, hitherto known
only for the Giurgiu Region in Rumania, is supplemented by additional diagnostic characteristics.
Introduction
The Anostracan fauna of the Balkan Peninsula is
still inadequately known, although Anostraca are well
represented, especially on the territory of Former
Yugoslavia. Concerning the presence of representatives of the genus Tanymastix Simon, 1886, there were
no previous reports for this territory. The present work
is mainly based on material of Anostraca collected during several prewar limnological expeditions all over
Former Yugoslavia.
The data contained in the descriptions are based
on observations and measurements of numerous specimens of each sex.
The sampling points of Tanymastix species are presented according to the international UTM (Universal
Transverse Mercator) grid, Sivec (1980).

Male On average smaller than female. Body length
from front to end of shaft of cercopods 8 to 16.5 mm.
Antennula conspicuously overreaches distal end of
proximal article of antenna (Fig. 1. A). Antenna biarticulate. Proximal articles of antennae in their basal parts
joined medially forming clypeus (Fig. 1. E,F).
Antennal appendages arising from dorsal, proximal portion of clypeus as characteristic of genus, with
an usual species specific shape (Fig. 1. A,B). Mediodistal outgrowths of clypeus with two pairs of lobes
(Fig. 1. E,F). Dorsal lobes narrow and widely separated
