Distributions of the six anostracan species occurring in South India are depicted in Figs 3, 4, & 5.
Belk (1984) pointed out that this number is low compared with the 13 anostracan species living in the much
smaller, but climatically more diverse state of Arizona in the United States. He suggested that this contrast supported the hypothesis advanced in Belk (1977)
that thermal variation associated with temporary pond
refilling cycles is an important factor controlling anostracan species richness. Additional support is supplied
by comparison with the 19 species anostracan fauna of
the ecologically diverse state of California, USA (Eng
et ai., 1990; Belk & Serpa, 1992; Fugate, 1993). Other
temperate regions smaller than tropical South India,
but with richer anostracan faunas include Morocco
with 10 (Thiery, 1986), former Yugoslavia with 13
(Petrov & Marincek, 1991), and Italy with 14 (Mura,
1986).
Acknowledgments
Denton Belk extends special thanks and appreciation to these people for helping make his two visits to India a success and a wonderful experience:
Bernice Anatharaj, J. Antony Basil, S. K. Battish, B. Biswas, S. S. Guraya, Kunthala Jayaraman,
S. Krishnaswamy, N. Munuswamy, P. Navaneethakrishnan, C. K. G. Nayar, M. K. Durga Prasad, Y. Radhakrishna, K. Ramalingam, K. N. Reddy, S. T. Sam,
Christy Selvanayagam, T. Subramoniam, and Sudha
Varadarajan. Support for study trips to India in 1979
and 1980 from the Smithsonian Institution Special Foreign Currency Program is very much appreciated. We
thank Yutaka Koshida for specimens from Japan. A
personal note by Denton Belk. Marie Simovich suggested Cristine Esparza, whose family home is near
mine, volunteer to help with my research while she was
home from college for the summer. Cristine measured,
counted, made maps, and drew figures making it possible to bring this long dormant paper to completion.
This situation lead me to reevaluate my understanding
of coauthorship. In light of this rethinking, I wish to
publicly apologize to Guido Pereira for not including
him as coauthor on my 1989 paper on identification of
conchostracans by egg shell morphology.
