Fig. 5. Head profiles of E. magdalenensis. Specimens raised in very warm temporary pools (up to 40°C); a, b: and in temporary waters with
moderate temperatures (up to 32°C); e, f: The specimens are illustrated by pairs: a and c as well as e and f are in the same stage of gonadal
development; nevertheless, morphological characters are early larval in a and b (stages S-S; S-6) and 'normal' in e and f (stages S-7; S-8). S-S
and S-7 represent the stages with egg maturation within the ovaries and before oviposition and S-6 and S-8 are the first stages with eggs in the
brood chambers. For stages S-S and S-6 also the telson profiles are shown (c, d). It is expected that in even warmer environments, ovaries are
ripened in stage S-4 and oviposition occurs in stage S-S. This case is still under study in laboratory conditions as well as in nature. In cooler
ponds the first oviposition does not occur until S-9, as is found in certain populations of the upper Magdalena Valley (comp. Roessler, 1990).
Scale bar 0.1 mm (a, b, e, f,); O.lS mm (c, d).
