The shape of the basal-dorsal part of the thumb is
an auxiliary character used to aid in assigning species
to the different species groups. Thus, for example, in
the vitreus group, the dorsal side of the basal part of
the thumb is strongly curved, while in the torvicornis
group it is longer and slightly curved (Fig. 6).

Distribution. Africa and North America.
Streptocephalus dendyi Barnard, 1929
Material examined. BMNH 1932.2.25.61-64, Rondebosch, Cape Town, South Africa 2dJ15.1, 16.3 mm,
and 1 <¥ 18.8 mm; DB977 South Africa 2<.f><¥c. 15 mm.
Remarks. In males examined, the pulvinus is
absent. The large male has only one complete cercopod, which bears spines on its distal part. The other
two males have only setose cercopods. Probably these
specimens are not fully grown. However, a variation
of the structures of the cercopods has been reported by
Barnard (1929), and Hamer et al. (1994a).
