clay (9 rl)
Fig. 2. A. Size frequency distribution (%) of particulates of clay type I, determined by laser sizing. B. Percentage of 'empty' yeast cells in
faecal pellets of Thamnocephalus platyurus (five treatments; five replicates) at different concentrations of clay type I, and 0.2 g I-I of baker's
yeast. Bars represent standard deviations. * * = significant at p
by a Malvern Laser sizer (Jones, 1987)(Figs 2A &
3A). Yeast-clay suspensions were maintained by gentle aeration at the conical bottom of the container. The
suspensions were distributed to the test containers by
a multi-channel peristaltic pump with a flow rate of
1.25 ml min-I. The culture medium was tap water,
previously aerated for a minimum of 24 h. The duration of the experiments was 6 h. Constant light (20
Watt fluorescent lamp) was supplied. The percentage of 'empty' yeast cells was determined as follows.
