Method
Study Area
The study area was an embayment of the South China Sea on the northwestern
coast of the island of Luzon and consists of coastal areas and tributary waters that
are utilized for the aquaculture of milkfish and oysters. Geographical proximity
of the oyster farming grounds to industrial and residential sites were considered
to be significant as they may affect the amount of heavy metals present in the
environment.
Sampling was done at 12 stations in Lingayen Gulf in the province of Pangasinan,
Philippines (Fig. 12.1). Approximately 7.5–10 nautical miles distance in between
sampling stations was employed to geographically represent the Gulf. Sampling
points with commercial oyster growing structures were established using a Global
Positioning System (GPS) instrument to accurately locate the sample collection area
and to facilitate repetitive sampling (Table 12.1).
