the American cockroach Periplaneta americana. F, frontal ganglion;
C, corpora cardiaca; A, corpora allata; I, ingluvial ganglion; PV,
proventricular ganglia; r, recurrent nerve; e, esophageal nerve. x6.
Reproduced from Aloe, L. and Levi-Montalchini, R. (1972) In vitro
analysis of the frontal and ingluvial ganglia from nymphal specimens of the cockroach Periplaneta americana, Brain Research 44,
147-163, © 1972, with permission from Elsevier Science
Culture 1. Collect ganglia from six to 10 specimens in physiological solution.
set-up 2. Clean adjacent tissue away from the ganglia, in particular fat body
cells that adhere to their surface.
3. Transfer the ganglia into Maximov slides fllied with culture medium .
• • Results
Aloe and Levi-Montalcini (1972) maintained a culture of stomatogastric
ganglia for 2-7 weeks. The ganglia became firmly attached to the surface
of the cover slide placed at the bottom of the culture vessels. When the
ganglia were cultured together with intact brain, thoracic ganglia, and
foregut explants dissected out from embryos of the same species, the
stomatogastric ganglia produced a profuse nerve fiber outgrowth, starting in the 2nd week of incubation, and increasing progressively in subsequent weeks.
