up to the southern tip of Norway's west coast (Fig.2.6). Ideal weather
conditions fostered the bloom: extensive insolation, high temperatures
(about 23°C) and gentle winds. The coastal current traveling from the
southwest coast of Sweden towards the southwest coast of Norway and
thus the North Sea, contributed to the spreading of the bloom. Never
before had the consequences been so severe. The mortality covered a
wide spectrum of marine organisms among which several species of
