15.5 Summary and Conclusions
The lagoon of Venice is a good example of an ecosystem with profound
changes as a result of increasing human activities, after the Wodd War
II. The hydrographic alterations of the lagoon favoured the silting of
wide areas, whereas the high nutrient inputs due to increasing industry,
agriculture and tourism since the 1970s, accounted for the accumulation
of nitrogen and phosphorus in the surface sediments, supporting
remarkable changes in benthic associations.
