production agrees very well with measured values for Lake Grevelingen
(150-225 gC m- 2 year- 1 in 1979-1981; Vegter and De Visscher 1984)
and for Lake Veere (300 g C m -2 year- 1 in 1983; Stronkhorst et al. 1985).
Most of the other terms in the budgets are more or less hypothetical,
since empirical data for direct comparison are lacking. However, there is
circumstantial evidence for the adequacy of the calculated budgets. They
are consistent with other parts of the model output, e.g. phytoplankton
