consequence, the hydrology of the lake is dominated by the throughput
of fresh water, which causes a strong and almost permanent salinity
stratification in parts of the lake. The fresh-water input also results in a
considerable input of nutrients due to the agricultural use of the
polderland. The conditions in the lake are eutrophic, with dense
phytoplankton blooms and prolonged oxygen depletion in the bottom
water layer below 6-10 m.
