Sea (800 per std. haul), at the mouth of the Gulf of Aden and off and near Somalia, Kenya
and Tanganyika. S. minima is absent near and off the coasts of India except for a single
station near the SW coast of India. It is found to be 3 times more abundant during the
SW monsoon.
Several authors considered this to be a coastal species (THOMSON, 1948; FURNESTIN,
1952, 1953; PIERCE, 1953). However, the present distribution shows a different pattern
since a large population seems to be fairly stable south of the Equator from about 50 ° to
about 70° E and includes the highest densities found. ALVARINO'S interpretation (1965)
of it being a boundary species seems to be confirmed.
