Agulhas Bank Plankton
219
f) Species widespread in the surveyed part of the Indian Ocean and over the Bank,
except in the inshore belt west of Algoa Bay.
Undinula darwini
U. vulgaris
Eucalanus attenuatus
E. crassus
Rhincalanus cornutus
Calocalanus plumulosus
Centropages furcatus
Ponte/lina plumata
Acartia negligens
Macrosetella gracilis
g) Species common off the west coast in the Benguela Current system and over the
western half of the Bank. They are also found in the offshore cyclonic eddy 100 miles
south of the Cape in April 1964.
Metridia lucens
Calocalanus tenuis
Centropages brachiatus
C. styliremis
In order to gain further confirmation and explanation of the above patterns, many
more observations will have to be made. The hydrological data and plankton collections
already available may still be too far apart in time (one month) to be capable of catching
the crucial processes at work in this very intricate area.
Certain species coming in from the south or SW encroach to a variable extent on the
western edge of the Bank, where they can be quite numerous in winter or spring. They are:
Calanus tonsus
Clausocalanus ingens
Calanoides sp.
Euchirella rostrata
They originate presumably from the southern latitudes and may be carried into our area
by seasonal shift of the large eddy system centered around the Schmitt-Ott Seamount.
