Despite the seasonal variations, the data obtained at the southbound stations of the
"Eltanin" cruise were quite similar to those reported by JITIS (1969) who reported a rate
of production of 0.13 gC m- 2 day- l at 9° 30'S in September. STEEMANN NIELSEN and
AABYE JENSEN (1957) reported a slightly higher value (0.17 gC m- 2 day-I) at 10° S in
September, and SAI]O (1965) found a value of 0.18 gC m- 2 day- l at 12 ° S in December- January.
4. Distribution of the Nutrients in Relation to Phytoplankton Standing Stock
The phosphate data (Fig. 8) compare favorably with those recorded in the highly
productive areas in the western regions of the Indian Ocean during the upwelling season
