in the soft parts of their body, it has been suggested that a "mussel watch" be established, that
mussels be analyzed in order to check on pollution of the environment. The mercury concentration in 30-mrn-long northwest European mussels, Mytilus edulis, reflects the mercury contamination of the coastal waters. High amounts are to be found off the Rhine and the Thames. The
