Preface
Negev expedition in 1971 and with research in the mediterranean scrub
of Portugal. For his international pioneer work and his stimulation of
the whole field research, he received numerous international honors
for his impaction ecophysiology, such as the Balzan Prize (1988). He
is a member of the German Academy of Science (Leopoldina) and of
the European Academy of Science (1991), and foreign honorary
member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1994). In
1991 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Science and Art,
Bayerischer Maximiliansorden fUr Wissenschaft und Kunst, which only ten botanists have thus far received, including Hugo von Mohl
(1853), Alexander Braun (1874), Julius von Sachs (1888), Wilhelm
Pfeffer (1895), Simon Schwendener (1897), and Carl Correns (1932).
This volume is dedicated to Otto Ludwig Lange on the occasion
of his retirement. His friends and colleagues, who have joined and
followed Otto Lange since his early beginnings, take this opportunity
to review this field of research, ranging from molecular biology to
global modeling. We think that this research is not only a mirror of
the rapidly evolving discipline of ecophysiology, but also a basis for
future global climate modeling. In this sense we hope that this review
may be used by graduate students, to transfer the knowledge from one
generation to the next in a field of research which due to global change
has become increasingly important.
