Demersal fisheries use trammel and drift nets as well as hook and line in
well-oxygenated nearshore waters, while trawl fishery is limited to some
areas off northern Peru (5-9°S), with Peruvian hake (Merluccius gayi
peruanus) representing 70% (56,000 tons in 1993,192,000 tons in 1996) of
the landings. Other common species include gurnard (Prionotus stephanophrys ), congrios ( Genypterus maculatus, Lepophidium negropinna ), flatfish (Paralichthys adspersus, Hippo glossina macrops), mullets (i.e., Mugil
cephal us, M. liza ), sea bass (Paralabrax humeral is), dogfish (Mustelus spp.),
