The Lagoon Region and Estuary Ecosystem of Cananeia, Brazil

primary production is consumed by the microbial community and metabolic activity is largely due to the presence of senescent phytoplankton
cells, which show a significant correlation with free or attached bacteria
(Mesquita 1994). Due to the enormous contribution of mangrove vegetation to dissolved or particulate organic matter, an organic matter-bacteria
based trophic structure dominates in the upper estuary. In the lower
reaches of the estuarine-lagoon system, with strong influence of coastal
waters, a trophic structure based on phytoplankton and zooplankton
probably prevails and, especially in winter, microbial metabolism is less
important (Mesquita 1983).
9.5 Sustainable Development and Management Needs
Owing to its proximity to the Sao Paulo metropolitan area (16 million
inhabitants), the Cananeia estuarine complex and lagoon region has economic, social, and ecological importance and its exploitation and multiple
use may improve sustainable development of one of the poorest populations in Sao Paulo State. A large part of the system is located in the area of
a national park under environmental protection, thus alternative ways for
development based on a sound scientific background have to be sought.
Fisheries, aquaculture, and ecological tourism seem to be promising activities for the future, giving new perspectives and promoting alternative ways
of using the "ecosystem services" of the lagoon region. Of great importance
is the continuous protection of the Tropical Atlantic forest in order to avoid
damage to the lagoon region and to fringing mangroves by introducing
potentially harmful materials from the Ribeira de Iguape River through
the Valo Grande channel. The construction of mobile devices in the Valo
Grande channel to regulate freshwater flow into the system would represent a man-made proposition to control ecological cycles in order to solve
fundamental problems of fluxes and external energy (Jorgensen and Tundisi, unpubl.).
