of organic materials from Po river is the main
force sustaining a permanent coupling in the
northern area, but the organic matter amounts
reaching the sediments might be so high that
benthic microbial activities may be induced to a
self feed-back control by temporary ipoxic conditions. We hypothesise that in these conditions
of clear pelagic-benthic coupling, organic matter
transfer might be reflected by spatially and temporally confined functional uncoupling.
Therefore, seasonal variations in the chemical
and biological features of the water - sediment
interactions may affect the balance between supply and exploitation of organic matter, thus forcing the systems to different trophic patterns.
