Tuscany. where 1,000 samples were examined
from an area of 20,000 km 2 (Dall' Aglio et al.
1966a). Figure 1 reports the Hg distribution in
stream sediments. This geochemical map resulted to be very significant either for mineral exploration (new Hg mineralizations were found in
the vicinity of some anomalies) or for environmental purposes.
Fifteen years later huge Hg anomalies were
picked up in marine sediments from the
Tyrrhenian Sea. Figure 2 shows the map of mercury distribution: notice the high values of the
anomalies induced in marine sediments by the
input from Ombrone, Albegna and Fiora rivers,
whereas no significant Hg anomalies are found
north of Elba Island (Baldi et al. 1979).
Twenty years later Hg content in local fisheries was frequently found to be higher than the
allowed MAC values (Bernhard and Buffoni
1982). The diagram in Fig. 3 shows the differences between the Hg content in fisheries (sardines) from the Mediterranean Sea and from the
Atlantic sea. Inside the Mediterranean Sea we
have other Hg contributions (for instance from
100
Spain) apart those from the Tuscany geochemical province.
More recent publications. as well as controls
on fisheries, indicated that frequently Hg MAC
values are higher than the allowed MAC values,
particularly in the area in the vicinity of the huge
anomalies in marine sediments in front of the
rivers coming from the Hg mineralized areas of
continental Tuscany.

Southern Tuscany
As a result of research jointly conducted by
RIMIN S.p.A. (ENI Group) and the Earth Science
Department, Rome 1 University "La Sapienza",
new data were collected on the distribution of
trace elements of mining and environmental
interest in Latium (Dall' Aglio 1997; Dall' Aglio et
al. 1992). Subsequently, similar data obtained in
