diversity of the actual deep faunas of the basin is
not tied to the increase of the temperature of the
bottom water but to the effects of plate tectonics
which have deeply modified the morphology of
the boundary region between the Atlantic Ocean
and the Mediterranean Sea and therefore the
pattern of the shallow and deep currents (from
an Atlantic broad gulf to a semi-enclosed basin).
