These results refer to the transport by the
coastal flow and cannot be compared with those
obtained by Gadc et al. (1997), whose computation was applied to the whole section from the
Italian to the Croatian coast, including the offshore transport of geochemical material.
Conclusions
One of the major tasks of the PRISMA-2 project
in the Ancona area was to evaluate the mass and
geochemical transports coming from the
Northern Adriatic Sea. As a fIrst approach data
collected during three surveys carried out in two
different seasons were considered.
Fresh water transport along the Ancona
coast proved similar during the summer and
winter cruises. These estimations are consistent
with the total input due to all the rivers in N.A.S ..
The coastal near-surface current measured in
this area was lower in the summer (mean about 3
cm/s) than in the winter (mean about 5 cmls)
while the area occupied by the fresh flow was
smaller in the summer preserving similar fresh
transport.
The high variability in trasport of all the geochemical parameters due to the coastal flow
seems to be more dependent on dynamical forcing than on changing concentrations, except for
Nitrate. The southward transport in September
proved 10 times higher for nitrates and about 46 times higher for the other parameters than in
August. Due to the smaller area involved by the
southward flow in winter, the transport of geochemicals in March was not signifIcantly different from that found in August, except for nitrate,
