Meteorological Conditions in the East Frisian Wadden
Sea from 1994-1996
Verena Niesel
Biological and chemical processes were examined in the backbarrier area of Spiekeroog island from 1994 to 1996. Many of these processes are regulated by climatic conditions. Thus, these conditions are relevant for the biotic as well as for
the abiotic environment.
Meteorological data were recorded at two sites. One weather station was situated in the salt marshes between Carolinensiel and Harlesiel (Fig. 3.1.2). At this
station air temperature and wind speed were measured hourly from March to November. Measurements were not carried out in the winter months. A weather station from the German Weather Service (DWD) is located on the island of Norderney. At this station water temperature, air temperature, wind speed, wind
direction and cloud cover were measured during all three years of observation.

East Frisian Coast (Norderney and Carolinensiel)
A comparison of the air temperature at the two stations showed only slight differences (Fig. 3.2.1). Therefore the continuous data of the air temperature from
Norderney were used for further consideration. A comparison of the wind speed at
both stations showed that the fluctuation was similar, but the data from Norderney
often reached higher values than those from Carolinensiel. Despite of the higher
values, the data from Norderney were used for the comparison of the three years
because they were continuously recorded. Table 3.2.1 shows the kind of representation used for the different parameters.
