It appears that the subtidal parts of the macrofauna populations were not
strongly affected by the ice winter in the North Frisian Wadden Sea near Sylt
(Strasser, pers. comm.). According to results from Beukema et al. (1988), which
showed stronger subtidal effects of ice winters the more north-westerly the area of
investigation was situated, one should have assumed that effects of low temperatures should extend far into the subtidal especially at the North Frisian coast. Adversely, at the East Frisian part of the Wadden Sea, the subtidal parts of the population of at least L. (,of/chi/ega were severely affected, eventually caused by
upwelling of cold water.
The comparison of both regions elucidates that the main differences in ice winter effects take place in the subsequent seasonal development in the pelagic system
(dominating algal species. temporal dynamics of meroplankton). In the benthos of
both regions. the expected effects on cold sensitive species were observed. followed by a localized good recruitment of some macrofauna species.
