5 Conservation Costs of PGRFA
Option A represents a basic or rudimentary approach to the implementation of
the activities. In situations where costs could not be determined precisely, it
assumes the least costly of reasonable possibilities. The number of countries,
institutes or communities covered is lower than in other options. US $ 109 million
were estimated for the basic approach.
The moderate approach, for which US $ 185 was estimated, is based on
intermediate assumptions regarding needs. Its general coverage is greater than in
the basic approach, but is consistent with known and documented needs and
realistic absorption and implementation capacity of countries. US $ 337 million
were estimated for a high-urgency approach. This approach reflects a very high
necessity of activities at present and in situations where costs cannot be precisely
determined, it assumes the more costly of reasonable possibilities. By making the
additional needed financial resources available on an annual basis and assuming
that these resources were utilized for the described activities, it may be assumed
that the conservation objectives will be achieved.
