10gN 1 would be the parameter for anabolism in our respiration experiments
as I explained before, 10gN 2 would be the constance of velocity for the
weight. But the value of 10gN 2 is the same for all processes proportional
to weight and therefore also applies to catabolism. Hence the exponent
IX in the exponents on metabolism represents the energetic relation between
anabolism and catabolism. The same would apply for the exponents of
other energetic processes.
The "Struktur-Energie"
After having explained the meaning of the exponent of the allometric
function as an expression of the energetic relation between anabolism and
catabolism we may go a step further in the evaluation of the results of
Dr. PANDIAN. Anabolism is described by:
an = a·wO' S
and conversion by:
conv = C·WO. 54
From these two equations we may derive the energy needed for the organization of the unity of weight and find:
a·w O • S : c·w O . 54 = x: w
x =!!.... . w(i + 0.8 - 0.54) = ~ . W1.26

The exponent being higher than unity means that with growing size
more energy is needed for the organization of the body substance. Unfortunately PAN DIAN has not given numbers from which it should be
possible to estimate the value of catabolism, but we may be sure that the
a
quotient -- has a higher value than a or c. Therefore the amount of the
c
energy balance (4) is higher than on the right side. If the matter produced
by anabolism is catabolized only energy proportional to weight is disengaged.
The organization of the living body substance needs more energy than the
chemical composition assigns.
This mathematical deduction is easy to understand because there is
energy needed for the transport of the nutritious matter from the gut to the
organs, for concentration energy etc. From this point of view it is also
easy to understand that the energy needed for the organization of body
substance increases with increasing size.
BERTALANFFY (1942, 1951) already perceived this energy and used for
it the denotation "Zellarbeit". I would propose the denotation "StrukturEnergie". The progress we reached by our mathematical derivations consists
