14.3.4 Carbonate Shelves: the Middle East
OU Province
This hydrocarbon habitat is demonstrated here by an
example of a large shelf sea which was later incorporated into a foredeep. It represents the richest hydrocarbon province of the world, the Middle East oil
province around the ArabianIPersian Gulf (Fig.
14.l2a).

During the Mesozoic this area was characterized
by a broad stable platform on the southwestern side
of the Tethys ocean. On the landward side of the
platform, ramp-type, mixed carbonate-c1astic units
were deposited during regressive phases. The central
and northeastern, seaward parts of the shelf were
differentiated into broad regional highs, horsts, tilted
faultblocks, and salt swells. These areas were dominated either by carbonate sediments accumulated un-
