the ice floe with sharp edges and corners is well delineated by this method. Based on
these detailed floe shapes, both translation and rotation of the floe can be estimated.
The floe speeds are approximately 0.32 mls from day 21 to day 24, and 0.26 mls from
day 24 to day 27. The rotations of the floe due to the shear through the opening of the
polynya are approximately 50 0 from day 21 to day 24 and 400 from day 24 to day 27.
Within 6 days, the floe moved approximately 150 km and rotated by 90 0 due to the
strong shear associated with the evolution of polynya as summarized in Fig. 9.
