The Anglo Brazilian Gravity Project (ABGP) - a collaborative venture between
GETECH and EPUSP in association with IBGE in Brazil - is currently filling the data gap
in central Brazil with new gravity data. At the start of this project, this was the largest
remaining continental gravity data void outside Antarctica.
GRA VITY MODEL
Each of the gravity compilations took many years of staff time due to the complexity of
searching out, collating and processing such huge data sets.
Gravity Data Sources
Land and marine gravity surveys of a range of scales and resolutions typically come from
a variety of sources which include.
National survey groups often have gravity data covering much of their country. These
data are sometimes total coverage at very high resolution (several stations per square
kilometre), but sometimes very widely spaced, patchy coverage (along lines of roads,
rivers etc.).
National oil companies sometimes have data covering the whole country, but more
often gravity is clustered in potential exploration areas.
International oil companies hold data in areas of economic interest, particularly around
the margins of continents. These individual and often small surveys can generally be
linked up to produce a more continuous coverage for a country or region onshore and
offshore.
Academic and government research institutes have collected data at a suitable scale for
their current investigation. These range from marine surveys over continental margins or
oceanic features to more detailed studies both onshore and offshore.
Data were collected from all these types of source, supplemented by open file data from
archives at the International Gravity Bureau (B Gl) , Toulouse, France and the Defense
Mapping Agency (DMA), St. Louis, USA. National groups in 72 countries co-operated
to help get together the coverage shown in figure 1, containing data for virtually every
country in the Project areas. Many of the data sets were extracted, with the help of
GETECH staff, from archives in the country concerned or in the offices of international
oil companies. In some countries, particularly in eastern Europe and Former Soviet
Union, these projects brought gravity data out from their military status for the first time.
