pollens, diatoms) is the main component by mass, as has already been shown earlier
(Shevchenko et aI., 1995). Content of organic carbon varies from 7.54 to 26.9 % (Table 1)
(17.6 % in average, n=7 samples). A number of investigations carried out in the recent years
confirm that organic matter is one of the main components of the atmospheric aerosols (Aston et
aI., 1973; Isidorov, 1990; Matthias-Maser and Jaenicke, 1995).
Mineral particles also play an important role. The contents of different minerals vary
significantly from sample to sample (Table 1). In the mineral non-amorphous part of the coarse
fraction of aerosols in August-October 1993 the content of quartz ranged from 15 to 56 % (33
% in average), feldspars - from 4 to 20 % (in average 12 %), illite - from 12 to 38 % (in
average 23 %), chlorite plus caolinite - from 12 to 48 % (in average 31 %). High variability of
mineral composition can probably be explained by the different origin of the air masses.
In most samples small spherical particles (diameter from 1 to 10 /lm) presumably of
anthropogenic origin (fly ash) were detected. As it has been shown that these particles may be
