Land-Ocean Systems in the Siberian Arctic: Dynamics and History
Abelmann (1992) reported brackish diatoms from sea-ice samples along a transect between
the outer Barents Shelf and the northern flank of the Gakkel Ridge and suggested that they
might be incorporated into sea ice in the Laptev Sea region. Matthiessen (1995) also assumed
that the Pediastrum and Halodinium occurrence in surface sediments from the Iceland and
Greenland seas is due to the transport of sea ice in the Transpolar Drift and the East Greenland
current from the Laptev Sea across the eastern Arctic Ocean. Therefore, chlorococcalean algae
can be useful indicators for both paleo-river discharge and sea-ice transport.

I thank J. Thiede and H. Kassens for the possibility to join the Russian-German project
"System Laptev Sea", the opportunity to participate in the Transdrift Expeditions and their great
interest in this investigation. I thank also P. Mudie, W. Brenner and 1. Matthiessen for
constructive reviews. The Alfred Wegener Institute is thanked for providing surface samples of
"Polarstern" Expedition ARK-IXl4. This research is supported by the Ministry for Education,
