sediments of the Laptev Sea and the Kara Sea, In the Central Arctic values of >2 % are
common; at some locations up to 8 % and more are reached (Figure 7).
Distribution of opaque minerals
Generally, the amount of opaque minerals is high in the investigation area, varying between 20
and 30 %, except for the Laptev Sea shelf where minimum values of <10% occur. In contrast,
the rivers Yana and Anabar contain 42 % and 29 %, respectively. From the Laptev Sea toward
the central Arctic Ocean a trend of decreasing amounts of opaque minerals was observed
(Figure 8).
