2151-1934 m.
Diagnosis
Vertebrae 60 (10+50), dorsal fin rays (D) 55. Pectoral fin rays (P) 31. Radials in pectoral girdle
(Rad. pect.) 3 (2+0+1), the upper two notched. Two pairs of pleural ribs present. Hypural
plate single, with a posterior slit. Mouth terminal; oblique. Teeth simple. Gill slit situated above
pectoral fin base, its length about 113 of head length (HL). Posterior end of operculum below
level of lower margin of eye. Two suprabranchial pores present; post-ocular pore absent.
Pectoral fin located low. Body quite firm, robust and almost ungelatinous. Skin with cactuslike prickles. Head 27.4 % of SL, preanal length 44 %, disk length 5.8 %. Colour light, with
greyish tint; peritoneum pale.
Description
Vert. 60, D 55, A 50, P 31. Rad. pect. 3. Gill rakers 7. Burke's pore formula: 2-5-7-2. Pyloric
caeca 21.
Head large (its length 3.6 times in SL), high and compressed, with its width much less than
its depth (53 and 87 % of HL); tapering downward on the sides so that in ventral view the
contours of the eyes and bony rim of the interorbital space are visible (Figure 2). Upper head
contour widely rounded in front of eye. Snout deep, not projected. Eye large, 4 times in HL,
placed inside of large (113 of HL) orbit. Distance between orbital rim and contour of eye about
1/3 of eye diameter. Pupil round, about 113 of eye diameter. Suborbital space (from lower
margin of orbit to end of mouth cleft) equal to eye. Nostril ending in a short tube situated
slightly anterior to eye center. Mouth oblique, terminal. Mouth cleft slants downward
posteriorly, its end reaching to vertical of anterior margin of eye; posterior end of upper jaw
reaching to vertical of eye center. Teeth simple, 21 (24) oblique rows on each half of upper
(lower) jaw; about 7 teeth in a full row near symphysis; symphysial gap absent. Lips wide, not
fleshy. Chin not massive, rounded in ventral view. Upper and lower pharyngeal teeth present.
Gill slit situated above pectoral fin base, extending downward to the level of the 2nd pectoral
ray; gill slit quite large (its length nearly 113 of HL), and located rather low, its upper end level
with pupil and lower end reaching down almost to level of posterior end of mouth cleft.
Opercular flap small and triangular, placed at lower part of the gill slit; its posterior end below
the level of the lower margin of the eye. Gill rakers knob-like, with a few needle-like
