xanthophyll ~carotenoids.
Xanthophyta (syn. Xanthophyceae, yellow-green algae) phylum of the kingdom
Protoctista, created to categorize algae with green plastids, but otherwise
resembling chrysophytan algae, especially in their flagellar apparatus
(~Chrysophyta) . Xanthophyta contain chlorophyll-c and heteroxanthin, but no
fucoxanthin. Their storage products are fatty oils and chrysolaminarin, but
not starch. Most of them are microscopic freshwater organisms. The genus
Vaucheria forms threads of several cm. It also lives in coastal salt marshes.
Meringosphaera is often present in tropical marine nanoplankton.
XBT expendable bathythermograph, ~bathythermograph.
xenobiotic compounds completely synthetic chemical compounds not occurring
naturally on earth.
Xenophyophora phylum of the kingdom Protoctista. Large marine unicellular multinuclear organisms with an often spherical, multi-branched and fragile test.
They live on or in the deep-sea bottom, feed by pseudopodia, and can reach
dimensions as large as 25 cm in diameter.
xerophile adapted to growth in habitats where freshwater is rare, e.g., deserts,
but also salt marshes.
X-ray methods for digestion the rate of food digestion in fish can be followed by
taking X-ray photographs of prey or specially treated food pellets in the
stomach of the living fish at regular intervals.
