wave energy in waves energy is continuously changing from one form to another and vice versa. In gravity waves at the sea surface or at depth (internal waves)
there is an exchange between the kinetic energy of the orbital motion and the
potential energy of the sea surface. It is usually expressed as energy density,
i.e., energy per surface area. This is proportional to the square of the wave
height. Wave energy is transported by progressive waves at a speed (the group
velocity) that, apart from long waves, differs from the speed of propagation of
the individual waves (phase velocity). In short waves the group velocity is half
the phase velocity.
wave generation ~wind wave.
wave-induced current in surface waves water particles gradually move in the
direction of wave propagation (~Stokes drift). If the waves approach the coast
this net water transport causes an equilibrium state with an elevation of the
surface balancing the inward flow. In the case of an oblique wave approach a
longshore current develops between the breaker zone and the shoreline. The
return of the inshore water transport by the waves occurs at distinct places
by rip currents at topographic lows in the near-shore sand bars.
wave number ~wave characteristics.
wave recorder measuring waves is determining the variation in time of the sea
level and eliminating long-period variations such as tides. Techniques used
are electrical (short-circuiting a series of contacts by the water), underwater
pressure gauges, and measuring the vertical displacement of a float or the vertical acceleration of a drifting buoy. In general these methods measure waves
irrespective of their direction of propagation. Directional wave recorders
require additional observations. Other types of wave measurements are remote
sensing of a wave field (stereo photography or radar measurements).
wave ripple ~ripple.
We.gener, Alfred ~continental displacement.
well logging measurement of physical properties of rock sections encountered
in a bore hole (well). The measurements are made by a sonde lowered into
the bore hole by a multi conductor cable. Usually several different measurements are made simultaneously during one withdraw such as electrical,
acoustic and radioactive properties. The recordings are plotted as a continuous function on a common depth scale. The word log is used for the individual curves as well as the gathering of curves. Well logs are commonly
referred to by type, e.g., gamma-ray log, which is the log of the intensity of
the natural gamma radiation.
