waste economically useless products, resulting from almost any human activity, that are disposed of in the environment. Domestic waste is waste introduced in the environment by municipal communities, and individual housekeepings. Industrial waste is waste introduced into the environment by industrial activities and can be of different kinds: side products of any synthetic
substance; acid-iron wastes [either sulfuric acid (H 2 S0 4 ) or hydrochloric
acid (HCl) or a combination of these two]; pharmaceutical waste; fly ash;
consolidated fly ash and scrubber sludge. Several types of waste are dumped
into the ocean; in each type, there are large variations or ranges in physical
and chemical properties. Dispersion, advection, and settling of a waste in the
ocean will depend on physical properties such as bulk density, solid density,
suspended solid concentration (for a liquid), and particle size. Classification
of wastes may be based on their origin (production, distribution, and consumption waste), their physical conditions (solid, liquid, slurry, smoke, or
gas), the way of possible treatment (combustible, inert, compostable, recyclable) or other specific characteristics (toxic, pathogenic, and radioactive
waste). ~ocean dumping.
water balance of the ocean the balance of all incoming and outgoing water at the
order of 450 10 3 km 3 y-1, via air-sea exchange, via land (run-off) or by formation and melting of ice. On average, the water balance of the ocean is
assumed to be in equilibrium. However, at very long time scales there can be
a residual term that may lead to sea-level changes (~climatic variation).

water mass the term water mass is often used in a specific sense, indicating
water with a well-defined combination of properties such as potential temperature and salinity, but sometimes also chemical, optical, or biological properties, by which it can be discriminated as a special body of water (~indicator).
Such a combination of properties is supposed to have been acquired in a
certain area, and the idea is that the water mass can be traced back to its
point of origin (source area). It is essential that the properties are conservative, i.e., that they should not be modified underway otherwise than by mixing between water masses. Therefore potential temperature is to be preferred
above actual temperature. In the analysis of water masses the temperature-salin-
