sess, under anaerobic circumstances, an an oxygenic photosynthesis system.
In the dark these organisms use the produced elemental sulfur for anaerobic
respiration and reduce it back to hydrogen sulfide. The sulfur cycle links air,
water, and sediment. A set of microbiologically mediated oxidation and
reduction reactions brings about the key exchange between the available
sulfate pool in the overlying water and the reservoir of precipitated sulfides
(mainly ironsulfide and pyrite) in the sediment. The natural cycle of sulfur is
disturbed by large-scale burning of fossil fuel, which liberates sulfur oxides
(S02 and S03) in the atmosphere. These sulfur oxides are important contributors to industrial air pollution and acid rain formation.

super ocean ~Panthalassa.
supercritical flow current condition in which the current speed exceeds the speed
of propagation of long waves, so that disturbances cannot propagate upstream. It occurs for strong currents over shallow depths (~Froude number)
and is not a normal condition in ocean dynamics.
supralittoral zone ~zonation.
supratidal zone ~zonation.
surf ~wave approach.
surface film accumulation of floating organic material, such as fatty acids and
hydrocarbons, in a very thin often monomolecular surface layer « 0.2 mm
thick). They may result from the spillage of surface-active substances (oil) or
from naturally occurring substances. They are very effective in damping capillary waves. Also, particulate carbon concentrations in this microlayer are one
order larger than in the subsurface, and sustain a specific flora and fauna.
~neuston.
surface microlayer interface between water and atmosphere. Since the surface
microlayer is a boundary between a polar phase (water) and a nonpolar
phase (air) it accumulates organic substances with nonpolar groups from
the water column. The surface microlayer can be disrupted by turbulence in
the water column.
surface tension tangential force resulting from molecular interactions, acting at
the transition between two fluids or between a fluid and a gas. The surface
tension tends to minimize the surface area of a fluid body. It is the restoring
force in capillary waves. Monomolecular layers of organic origin occurring at
