stable isotopes (isotope stratigraphy), the chemical composition (chemostratigraphy), and the seismic properties (seismic stratigraphy).
streamer ~seismic instruments.
stream function a mathematical expression that describes the pattern of a nondivergent, two-dimensional flow. Lines in the horizontal plane where the stream
function is constant are streamlines giving the direction of the current. Between
two streamlines flows a fixed quantity of the fluid per unit of time. The current speed is inversely proportional to the distance of the streamlines.
streamline line in a fluid, the tangent of which is everywhere parallel to the current vector. In stationary currents it is equal to the path of the stream. In
two-dimensional non divergent flow, the streamlines are given by a stream
function.
stress (1) (bio!.) any stimulus that disturbs or interferes with the normal physiological equilibrium of an organism. In ecotoxicology the term environmental
stress is sometimes used to indicate the interference of a specific ambient
(biotic or abiotic) parameter with the normal functioning of an organism, or
population. Stress is nonspecific and as such meaningless and should therefore not be used in biology science; the concept of stress originates from psychology; (2) (phys.) tangential force per unit of surface area as a result of friction. In oceanography wind stress over the sea and bottom stress are important
factors in the ocean dynamics. Internal stresses are caused by current shear.
strobilation ~Cnidaria.
subduction ~plate tectonics.
sublittoral zone ~zonation.
submarine canyon elongated cleft running partly across the continental shelf and
slope. --tdeep-sea fan.
substrate is in biochemistry a compound undergoing reaction with an enzyme.
In microbiology substrate is the food for the culture of the microorganisms.
Substrate or substratum can also be the material, sediment, or solid object
on which animals live or to which they are attached.
subtidal zone ~zonation.
succession the change in species composition with time. In plant and animal
communities modification of the physical or chemical environment of the
