side-scan sonar
sial granitic, gabbroic, acidic, or continental crust of the earth, plus the overlying sediments. Of dominantly silica-alumina (hence sial) composition and
specific density about 2.7 g cm-\ Compare sima. ~crust.
Siboga Expedition (1899-1900) a Dutch expedition to Indonesian waters with a
Dutch Royal Navy ship (comm. G.F. Tydeman). Hydrographical data were
collected to study the communication . of the different deep-sea basins of the
archipelago with the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The Banda Sea was found to
have a uniform temperature of 3°C below 1600 m, indicating this to be the
sill depth, its cold water was traced to the Pacific. Detailed mapping changed
the coast line of Timor considerably. The main emphasis was, however, on
biological sampling. Max Weber (zoologist) made extensive zoological collections, Mrs A. Weber-van Bosse, his wife, was responsible for the botanical
collections. She succeeded in demonstrating for the first time the algal
nature of coccoliths: she found them as skeletal plates in tiny phytoplankton
algae. They were already well known from sediments since the Cretaceous and
abounded in deep-sea sediments but their organic or inorganic origin was
still much debated.
side-scan sonar wide-beam echo sounder (~echosounding) with sideways directed
transducers for sound transmission and reception of the echoes. It produces
a picture of the sea floor that can be read as an aerial photograph of the

Multibeam aonat
Side-scan sonar. (After Anonymous 1983)
